The Silicon Valleys of the World

Although some may argue that there will never be another community that boasts the same entrepreneurial spirit and access to business opportunities as California’s Silicon Valley, there’s a growing recognition in the tech community that these “hot spots” are – in fact – popping up around the world.

According to John D. Sutter, writing for CNN:

“The fact that centers of tech innovation are emerging all over the globe – not just in that mountain-ringed, strip-mall-plagued valley near San Jose, California – is both encouraging and fascinating. Many of these emerging tech hubs are exporting technologies and ideas that could have impact all over the world, not just in their respective regions.”

In this infographic, we examine the world’s up-and-coming tech communities – from Germany to Mexico to Indonesia and more – and compare them on a number of different factors, including entrepreneurial mindset, access to capital and general strengths and weaknesses:

creating a inforgraphic like this and fail to mention Israel, is a big no no. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/rob-magazine/the-worlds-most-creative-cities/article2286363/. Israel has a  huge community of entrepreneur, and an easy access to capital, especially in the early stage (though we can see it as a globale tendency). Anyhow, just be aware to all this!

Omri – thank you for the feedback on Israel. I will check with our team that did the research. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment.  Would be great if you could include even more links and examples of the same kinds of things we included in the info-graphic.

If one talks about the silicon Valley he will be focussed on TECH Start Ups. The metrics used however are more generic. This is not wrong but for Valley Start ups it would be important to include an index how easy it is to sell off a start up, or a metrics about talent etc.- Thus to call this infographic the “silicon valleys of the world” is rather misleading.

Lutz – thanks for the feedback on including additional metrics about selling and talent! Great idea. We just posted an infographic around who works at a startup. You can see it here. Would love to hear your thoughts. http://blog.gist.com/2012/01/17/who-works-for-a-startup-infographic/

Nice infographic! Only suggestion is regarding the hexagon visualization in the “Local” section (I found it confusing), otherwise, looks sleek!

I agree with Omri, but good lord, how could you ignore Switzerland? From venture capital attractiveness indices (according to the IESE index you used) to actual VC money spent (these guys wrote an interesting report https://www.investiere.ch/blog/theory-vs-reality-venture-capital-europe) they are much more active than the IT-only German start-up scene.

Mexico is the least entrepreneurial country in the world… I lived there for a year. This ranking is bullshit.

      Seriously? Those are your arguments?

Even though “Turkey” is 2.4 in Europe, why Turkey is at the bottom of the list after Spain(2.2), Russia(2.17) and Italy(2.15) though it needs to right after UK (2.5) ?

    Am I missing a detail here ?

  • Olivia Nechita

I have the same problem as farukcelik somehow..
I do not agree with the ratings in Europe. I would say that rather emerging economies should be higher in top. Germany at the same time is very settled and procedural, people are already settled in and used with the efficient systems, whilst those in Romania and other countries are avoiding the systems and start on their own and are quite successfull..

Usually a ball representing the Earth or, later, the Sun is placed in its center. It is used to demonstrate the motion of the stars around the Earth. Before the advent of the European telescope in the 17th century, the armillary sphere was the prime instrument of all astronomers in determining celestial positions.
